A Good Eating Weekend…and more!

I’m a little late in blogging this week.  That doesn’t mean we didn’t eat well last weekend.  Quite the opposite!  Two nights of eating out and two good restaurants.

Meeting friends on Friday night, West on Centre in West Roxbury was the perfect midway point.  One side of the restaurant is a large open dining space, with a freestanding bar in front of the kitchen which is enclosed in glass so you can see what’s going on.  The other side of the restaurant is a busy bar scene! And, Centre Street itself has become a restaurant row.   Continue reading “A Good Eating Weekend…and more!”

A Triumph of Simplicity

Malt flour, water, yeast, sugar .  These are the ingredients in the bagels known as Montreal style found at Myer’s Bagels in Burlington, VT.  Unlike most Montreal style bagels, Myer’s uses no salt, eggs or preservatives.  The ingredients are mixed into a dough, hand cut, hand rolled, boiled in honey water which makes the sesames, poppy seeds, etc. adhere to them and gives the bagels a sheen.  Then they are baked in a wood burning oven. They’re smaller, less bready and it’s easy to eat more than one (less calories too!).  Get them plain or with sesame, poppy seed, garlic, onion and the best, Montreal Spice. No Recession Here!

Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steak House is not a restaurant we’d usually go to.  We’re not huge meat eaters and opt for more eclectic menus.  But we were there last night and here’s the reason why:  my very dear friend who shall remain nameless was at Del Frisco’s last week and impersonated me and 2 at the bar.  Okay, very funny!  But, on Tuesday I received a note from her waitress thanking me for dining at Del Frisco’s and to please come back!  So, we had to go.  My 2 at the Bar reputation was at stake!  Well, try and make a reservation for Saturday night.  Impossible.  We decided to have an early bird dinner and hopefully nab 2 seats at the bar at 5:30P which we did but not without a little wait. Red Sauce and Rocky Road

It ‘s hard to even blog about this one.  I’m not sure why we decided to go to East Boston.  We felt like some good old red sauce Italian and D’Parma’s is supposed to be good, gets solid reviews and we could make a reservation on Open Table.  I emphasize “supposed to be”.  Our friends are up for anything so into Boston and through the tunnel we went to East Boston.   Continue reading “Red Sauce and Rocky Road”

A Movie and Abigail’s

Yesterday afternoon we saw Jiro Dreams of Sushi, a documentary about Jiro Ono the owner of  Sukiyabashi a sushi only restaurant universally regarded as the best sushi restaurant in the world.  The restaurant, inconspicuously located in a Tokyo subway station, has only 10 seats and a dinner there costs a minimum of $350 per person.  People come from around the globe and call months in advance for reservations.  Jiro who is 85 years old has no signs of slowing down.  It was a fascinating movie and we will never look at sushi in the same way. Qingdao Garden

Saturday night in Chinatown. That sounded like a good idea; we haven’t had Chinese in a while.  But by the time we got in the car and started driving we decided that Chinatown would be a hassle with the parking nonexistent on Saturday night so we went to Cambridge to a restaurant we’d been to once before and loved – Qingdao Garden. Continue reading “Qingdao Garden”

Downtown Zihau

There’s nothing like a Mercado (market).  It’s the heartbeat of a city.  In Zihau the market takes up blocks.  Inside the market, stall after stall, packed tight selling anything you can imagine, from flowers to kitchen utensils and everything in between.  People shop and stop to eat at their favorite food stall.  Everyone has their favorite vendors.  Everything is fresh.  There are no chickens in plastic styrofoam cartons.  No shrink wrapped cheese.  You can smell the tomatoes and squeeze the melons.  Outside on the streets surrounding the Mercado there are more vendors selling everything from cheeses to chickens.   Continue reading “Downtown Zihau”

Mare

We went to the North End last night for dinner at Mare.  They’ve changed things and have added an oyster bar.

The restaurant is small.  When we entered we were seated at a table for two practically breathing on the couple next to us.  On the other side of us was an extremely loud table of six. Not good.  Being that we are “2 at the bar” we noticed two seats had opened up at the bar; not just two seats but the best, two corner seats.  Lucky us! Continue reading “Mare”
